UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The LIU men's ice hockey team opened its second second as a program on the road Sunday afternoon, taking on Penn State. The Nittany Lions, also playing in their season opener, beat the Sharks, 3-1.
Penn State got on the board first, scoring late in the first period on a power play. The Nittany Lions added another goal just a couple of minutes later, taking a 2-0 lead out of the first.
After a scoreless second period, the Sharks got on the board on an unassisted goal by sophomore
Nolan Welsh, who scored in the third period to cut the lead to 2-1. But the home team would add one more goal in the final minute of play, cementing the 3-1 win.
SHARK BITES
- Goalie Kris Carlson made 31 saves in net for the Sharks.
- Carson Musser and Spencer Cox had five and four blocked shots on defense for LIU respectively.
- Freshmen Isaiah Fox and PJ Marrocco led LIU on offense with four shots each.
- Up next, the two teams face off in a rematch, Monday, October 4 at 7 p.m.
