EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The LIU women's ice hockey team notched its first win of the season Friday at Northwell, beating Sacred Heart, 3-1. Freshman
Jeannie Wallner scored her first two NCAA goals in the game, including the game-winner.
Neither team scored in the first period, but Sacred Heart opened scoring in the second on a power play goal.
Three minutes later, Wallner tied it up, scoring her first collegiate goal in the 14th minute to make it 1-1.
The game stayed tied into the third period, when Wallner struck again. This time, she scored five minutes into the action, with help from
Megan Bouveur and
Matilda af Bjur on a power play to make it 2-1.
And then with 33 seconds left in the game, Bouveur scored on a power play to clinch the win, giving the Sharks a 3-1 lead.
Carrigan Umpherville and
Bri Eid had assists on the third and final goal for LIU.
Freshman goalie
Tindra Holm had the win in net, making 21 saves for the Sharks.
Up next, the two teams face off in a rematch in Connecticut, Saturday, October 16.
