BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU men's soccer team won its sixth straight game Thursday, beating the Merrimack Warriors at home, 3-1. With the win, the Sharks move to 9-2-2 on the season, and 5-0 in the Northeast Conference.
As has been the case in recent games for LIU, the visitors scored first, as Merrimack buried a shot in the 19th minute to take a 1-0 lead. But 12 minutes later,
Robert Winkler evened the score. The freshman fielded a beautiful pass over the defense by
Javier Rehberger, and netted it, tying the game up. 1-1.
In the second half, it was sophomore
Emil Jaaskelainen who would score the eventual game-winning goal. He footed one in off a pass on the right side from freshman
Alan Martinez, to put LIU up, 2-1.
And Winkler made it 3-1 for the Sharks in the 29th minute, scoring on a beautiful shot from a free kick at the top of the box, in what would be the dagger for the Warriors.
Up next, the Sharks hit the road for a big NEC game, taking on Fairleigh Dickinson, Sunday, October 17 at 7 p.m.
