Harper's Three-Hit Day Leads Baseball to Sweep of Saint Peter's

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Sharks continued to roll in their first home series of the year as the Long Island University baseball team completed the sweep of Saint Peter's University with a 5-2 triumph on Sunday, March 8.

Carlton Harper led the Sharks with three hits in four at-bats, collecting two doubles while adding one run batted in and one run scored. Cooper Shearon, Davyn Adamscheck, and Dawson Degnan all collected multi-hit games with two hits apiece, with Shearon knocking an RBI-double for a late insurance run.

On the mound it was Alec Huertas continuing the trend of quality starts for Shark pitchers, tossing five innings with one run allowed and five strikeouts. Nick Torres added two innings of relief, while Rob Griswold picked up his third save with 1.1 scoreless innings of work.

Both offenses struggled early, with the teams combining for 10 runners left on base through the first 2.5 innings. LIU finally broke through during the bottom of the third, as Shearon led off the inning with a walk and later came around to score on an RBI-single by Dawson to give the Sharks a 1-0 advantage. Harper plated another run with a ground ball through the right side of the infield and stretched the hit to a double to put two runners into scoring position. The Sharks tacked on one more run on a wild pitch and eventually capped off the inning with a run on a groundout by Tim Bechtold to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Peacocks got one run back an inning later before the Shark pitching staff settled in to keep Saint Peter's scoreless over the next three innings. Despite scoring one run in the eighth, the Peacocks were unable to chip away at the lead as the Sharks added an insurance run during the bottom of the eighth on Shearon's RBI-double down the left-field foul line.

LIU will return to action with a single game at Hofstra University on Wednesday, March 11. First pitch against the Pride is slated for 3:00 p.m.
