Proctor's Homerun Lifts the Sharks to First Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Myles Proctor hit the game-winning homerun in the seventh inning for the Long Island University baseball team as the Sharks took down the USC Upstate Spartans in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. The win marked the first of the year for LIU.

Highlights
  • Proctor's homer was one of his two hits. He also doubled, scored two runs, and recorded two RBI in his first career start.
  • Anthony Warneke went 3-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
  • Christopher Wasson scored a run and drove in another.
  • Alec Huertas pitched five innings and did not give up an earned run. He sprinkled five hits and struck out three Spartan batters.
  • Rob Griswold saw his first action out of the pen, throwing three strong innings in which he struck out four hitters. He earned the save.
  • Nick Torres picked up the win in relief.

How it happened
Upstate built an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Sharks jumped out in front in the third. Proctor began the inning with a double and advanced to third on an error by the opposing shortstop. Cade Biddle drew a walk and LIU had runners on the corners for Wasson. The junior from Massapequa, N.Y. ripped a double down the left field line, scoring Proctor and moving Biddle to third. Warneke then singled to the right side, driving Biddle home. Wasson later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Cooper Shearon.

LIU played small ball to add some insurance in the fourth inning. Andy Camilo walked to start the inning. Seth Surrett bunted him over. Carlton Harper singled, advancing Camilo to third. Harper got to second base on the throw. Proctor put the ball in the play, grounding out to short and bringing Camilo home in the process, making it 4-2 in favor of the Sharks. USC Upstate evened it up in the bottom half of the sixth inning.

Tied at four heading into the seventh, the bottom of the Sharks' lineup was due up. Proctor stepped into the batter's box with one out and delivered the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning, homerun to left field. Griswold entered in the bottom half of the inning for the rare three-inning save. He allowed just one hit and tallied two strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth, sealing the first victory of the year for LIU.
