Men's Hockey Clashes With Crusaders

WORCESTER, Mass. – The LIU men's hockey team scored two quick goals in the third period to nearly mount a comeback Sunday in Hart Rink, but the Sharks fell short, as Holy Cross took the 5-2 win. Both teams moved to 1-1 on the season with the result. Senior Christian Rajic scored again for LIU, while freshman Preston Brodziak had his first collegiate goal in the contest.

Holy Cross would get on the board first Sunday, scoring on a power play with 6:12 left in the first period. The Crusaders added one goal in the second period, before taking a quick 3-0 lead right as the third period got started. And the Sharks were facing a 4-0 deficit with 16 minutes left in the game.

The Sharks would shift the momentum four minutes later. Senior Christian Rajic had a shot from right side that glanced off the inside post of the goal, and the refs missed the call. But upon review, LIU was awarded the goal and got on the board, 4-1. A minute and 35 seconds later, freshman Preston Brodiak cut the lead in half, scoring off an assist from Brett Humberstone and Gustav Müller.

LIU kept the pressure on the Crusaders for the rest of the period, and when the Sharks were awarded a power play with just over two minutes to go, increased the pressure by pulling senior goalie Garrett Metcalf from net. Though LIU got some good looks in the time elapsed, Holy Cross would score an empty net goal with 30 seconds left to make the final score at Hart Rink 5-2.

Metcalf registered 41 saves for the Sharks in the loss, as the Crusaders out-shot LIU for the second straight game.

Up next, the Sharks return to Massachusetts in just under two weeks to face off against American International, Friday, December 4 at 2 p.m.
