PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Redshirt-sophomore
Ryan Ferro earned his first victory in a blue and gold singlet at 165 as the Long Island University wrestling team took on the University of Pennsylvania inside the historic Palestra on Sunday, Jan. 19 in Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association competition.
Ferro, the Ohio State University transfer, defeated Jacob Lizak thanks in part to a takedown with under one-minute remaining in the third period. Following the takedown, Lizak nearly earned an escape point before Ferro was able to use his strength to take Lizak back to the mat and ride out the match for a 5-4 decision.
At 174, sophomore
James Langan put up a great fight against Jeff Stefanowicz. Trailing by a 5-1 margin late in the bout, Langan earned a takedown to cut the deficit to two points, though Stefanowicz was able to earn an escape to keep the Wantagh native at bay.
The experienced Quaker squad proved to be too much down the rest of the lineup, as Penn earned four pinfall victories and wins at nine of 10 overall bouts.
The Sharks will remain on Long Island for the remainder of the season beginning with a matchup with Hofstra University on Sunday, Jan. 26 beginning at 2:00 p.m.
