Mark Malico opened the dual with a pin at 197, but the Long Island University wrestling team fell to The Citadel in its final non-conference dual of the season by a 34-9 margin inside the Pratt Recreation Center on Saturday, Jan. 11.
Malico earned a first-period pin following a takedown midway through the stanza to give LIU an early 6-0 advantage. The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with four points behind a major decision at heavyweight and used the momentum to earn 16 points over the next three bouts to take a 20-6 lead.
Sophomore
Dan Shafran helped LIU secure three points in the day's final bout at 184, coming from behind with two takedowns and a two-point nearfall just before the buzzer to earn a 7-4 win over Jared Zenie.
The Blue and Gold will close out their 2019-20 regular season with six Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association duals over the next six weeks. The conference stretch begins on Sunday, Jan. 19 when the Sharks travel to the City of Brotherly Love for a dual with the University of Pennsylvania inside the historic Palestra at 6:00 p.m.
