WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior
Julia Duffy was a scoring threat all match long Sunday afternoon as she finished with three shots on goal in a contest that saw the Long Island University women's soccer team suffer a 2-0 setback against Army West Point at Malek Stadium.
Along with Duffy's three shots on goal, sophomore
Amanda Hjelle and freshman
Nevaeh Rascon also had a shots for the Sharks. Freshman goalkeeper
Kayla DeTreux finished the match with five saves in the first appearance and start of her college career.
While DeTreux turned away two shots in the opening ten minutes, Army managed to sneak one past her in the 10
th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
She saved another shot by the Golden Knights with 14:19 on the clock before LIU's offense began to fire and created multiple scoring opportunities. Duffy had a shot on goal at 20:57 then with 27:37 remaining Hjelle had a shot blocked. The Black Knights would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Rascon had a shot blocked with 49:13 and Duffy continued to be a scoring threat throughout the second half as she had a shot on goal saved at 73:47. DeTreux recorded her final save of the match in the 89
th minute and it would conclude with a 2-0 final score.
