SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 2019-20 LIU Athletics' season kicked off on Friday, Aug. 23 when the women's soccer team took on the University of San Diego as part of its opening weekend in the Golden State. The Sharks came up short in its opener, falling to the Toreros by a 3-0 final.
LIU battled in its season opener, but ultimately was outmatched in its debut. The Toreros held a 16-2 advantage in shot attempts, including an 11-1 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Lydia Fraga Cordoba made a career-high eight saves in the contest, including an even four saves during each period.
San Diego jumped ahead in the fifth minute, converting a free kick attempt from just outside the penalty area to take a 1-0 advantage. Despite nearly 30 minutes of scoreless action, the Toreros extended their lead before the end of the half on a top-drawer caliber goal coming on a left-footed shot by Milan Moses from 30 yards out. Emily Poole tallied the first shot of the contest for the Sharks during the 41st minute but missed the target high as LIU found themselves down by the two-goal margin at the intermission.
The Toreros tacked on a final goal during the 77th minute on another upper-90 strike from distance. Freshman
Hedda Einarsson tallied a shot on goal as part of her collegiate debut during the 78th minute, a strike that proved to be the final attempt of the evening for LIU.
The Sharks will look for their first victory of the season on Sunday, Aug. 25 at San Diego State University. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. (EDT).
