EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Long Island University women's ice hockey team wrapped up its weekend series against Franklin Pierce University with a 7-3 victory at Northwell Health Ice Center on Saturday, Dec. 7.
It was all LIU from the opening face-off on Saturday as the Sharks put 13 shot attempts on goal during the first 20 minutes, tallying three goals to gather all of the early momentum. The Sharks got on the board when freshman
Julia Hoffmann scored her first career goal on a feed from her sister and fellow freshman
Renee Hoffmann. Moments later rookie
Matilda af Bjur somehow snuck a shot into the back of the cage on a shot from the slot and classmate
Elissa Taylor capped off the scoring with a dart inside the left post from the slot to give the Blue and Gold the 3-0 lead entering the locker room.
The Blue and Gold continued to dominate early in the second period, tacking on three more goals to extend the lead to 6-0. Freshman
Abby Latorella opened the scoring during the frame after deking past a defender and finishing top shelf for her fifth goal of the season. Freshman
Carrigan Umpherville tallied two goals during the frame to put the Sharks well ahead before the Ravens responded with two goals late to make it 6-2 entering the final period.
Despite one goal from the Ravens to officially cut the deficit in half at 6-3, freshman Alva Johnson broke free on the penalty kill and buried a short-handed goal to put the Sharks ahead by the final 7-3 margin.
The Ravens outshot the Sharks by a 31-23 margin on the day, though LIU finished 3-for-4 on the penalty kill for the day. Umpherville,
Julia Hoffmann, ad freshman
Saige McKay tied for the team lead with three points each and freshman
Mia McLeod made 28 saves in goal to earn the win.
LIU returns to the ice next weekend for a two-game non-conference series with the Rochester Institute of Technology beginning on Saturday, Dec. 14 at the Gene Polisenni Center.
