Johnsson’s First Career Hat Trick Ignites Ice Hockey’s Offensive Surge in 10-0 Win Over Post

EAST MEADOW, N.Y.- The Long Island women's ice hockey team completed its first series sweep in program history after defeating the Post University Eagles, 10-0, on Saturday evening. Alva Johnsson led the way with three goals for her first career hat trick and the first hat trick in program history. Carrigan Umpherville scored two goals and chipped in two assists for a team-high four points. The Sharks' 10 goals are the most goals scored in a single game in program history.

Umpherville kicked off a four goal first period with a goal in the first minute of play. It would only take two more minutes for Paula Bergström to find the back of the net. The remainder of the period was quiet until the 18th minute when Johnsson picked up the puck and skated around the defender and goalkeeper finding an opening in the left corner of the net. Johnsson capped off the opening period with her second goal of the game sending the Sharks to the locker room for the first intermission with a 4-0 lead.

The Sharks did not let up during the second period, matching the first period with another four goals. Megan Bouveur extended her scoring streak to three games in a row after redirecting a shot from Abby Latorella. Matilda af Bjur added her name to the scoresheet as she skated past the Eagles' defender to send the puck home. Molly Meyers extended the Sharks' lead to seven after picking up a lose rebound. Johnsson capped off the scoring in the second frame, netting her first career hat trick in the 14th minute of the second period.

The offense did not slow down and kept the pressure on the Eagles defense throughout the third period. Erin Hinch scored her first career goal midway through the third. Umpherville would score her second goal of the game in the 13th minute, giving the Sharks' its 10th goal of the game.

Kenzie Harmison earned her second straight victory in net, recording the first shutout in program history. She faced 16 shots on the night, while not allowing one to get by her.

For the second night in a row, the Sharks dominated offensively, finishing the game with 58 shots, 44 of them on target. In addition to the seven players who scored, eight players finished with an assist, led by Umpherville who had two. Linn Thomsen, Renee Hoffmann, Morgan Schauer, Bergström, Latorella, Bouveur, af Bjur all finished with an assist.

The Sharks return to the ice in two weeks with a non-conference matchup at Sacred Heart on Friday, November 29. Puck drop against the Pioneers is slated for 2:00 p.m.
