Men's Soccer Battles Sacred Heart to Scoreless Draw

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – 110 minutes of action was not enough for either squad to find the back of the net as the Long Island University men's soccer team earned a scoreless draw with Sacred Heart University on Sunday, Oct. 6.
 
Senior goalkeeper Matias Pesallaccia made four saves to earn his first career shutout. On the opposite end of the pitch, Pioneer goalkeeper Robert Strain stopped six shots to keep the Sharks scoreless. On the day, both team tallied an even 13 shot attempts and six corner kicks.
 
Sophomore Michael Gianino and freshman Papa Ndoye led LIU with three shots each, while sophomore Anton Ocampo and freshman Ryan Grande attempted a pair of shots.
 
LIU had two attempts during the final five minutes of the opening half stopped by Strain and Pesallaccia made his only stop of the half with 32 seconds remaining to send the game into the half tied at 0-0. During the 56th minute, Pesallaccia made a stop on a free-kick attempt by the Pioneers and the Sharks' final attempt of regulation on frame came during the 81st minute on an attempt Grande.
 
Neither side could even attempt a shot during the first overtime period. Ndoye gave LIU a chance during the 104th minute but had his attempt stopped by Strain. The Pioneers attempted the game's final moments later but the attempt sailed wide left, leading to the scoreless draw.
 
LIU will look to remain unbeaten in Northeast Conference play on Friday, Oct. 11 when it hosts Merrimack College beginning at 3:00 p.m.
