BROOKVILLE, N.Y.- For the second straight game the Long Island University women's soccer team shut out their opponent and scored four goals. Senior forward
Julia Duffy scored twice and added an assist in a 4-0 Northeast Conference win against Merrimack on Sunday afternoon.
In addition to Duffy's season-high five points, sophomore forward
Kendra Oldroyd scored once and added an assist. Freshman
Maria Orozco scored her first career goal freshman
Mariah Morgan chipped in her first career assist.
In goal, freshman goalkeeper
Kayla DeTreux earned her second consecutive shutout behind six saves.
Offensively, the LIU outshot Merrimack 13-10, but both teams were even with six shots on goal apiece.
Duffy got the Sharks on the board early in the fifth minute of the game, collecting the pass from Oldroyd to find the back of the net. The Warriors had a shot and a header, both of which were saved by DeTreux. Duffy would extend the Sharks' lead to two with about 10 minutes left of the first half where her initial shot bounced off the goalkeeper's hands and found its way to the back of the net. The Warriors would try to get on the board five minutes before halftime, but DeTreux came up with the stop to keep the two-goal lead intact.
Merrimack would threaten with back to back shots in the 63
rd and 64
th minutes, but DeTreux made two saves. Oldryod would tally her team-high fifth goal of the season in the 65
th minute after collecting the pass from Duffy, juggling the ball around the goalkeeper and shooting the ball to the top left corner of the net.
Orozco put the game away with her first collegiate goal in the 78
th minute after she collected the pass from Morgan and sent the ball to the back of the net from the top of the 18.
The Sharks travel to the Nutmeg State on Friday, October 18 to take on Central Connecticut State in a NEC matchup. Game time at the CCSU Soccer Field is set for 6:00 p.m.
