BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Senior
Taylor Brodsky scored her first goal of the season and
Kaitlyn Olton netted her team-high sixth goal of the season to lead the Long Island University field hockey team to its third straight win, taking down Wagner 2-1 on Friday afternoon.
The team honored Brodsky, senior
Sarah Anthony and senior
Marybeth Greenberg as part of senior day festivities prior to the start of the Sharks' first Northeast conference matchup.
The Sharks outshot the Seahawks nine to five and finished with five shots on goal compared to Wagner's four. LIU had eight offensive penalty corners and were able to convert on two of them. Olton finished with a team-high three shots, all of which were on target.
Jonna Klein-Holte had two shots, while Brodsky,
Sammy Bell and
Felicia King all finished with a shot.
Alexis Ruiz and Klein-Holte each added an assist.
Rachel Vellis had three saves in goal en route to her third-straight win. The defense successfully killed all six of Wagner's offensive penalty corners.
The Sharks got on the board early in the first quarter when Brodsky finished off
Alexis Ruiz's pass at the left goal post. Wagner tested Vellis midway through the first quarter with back-to-back penalty corners which she saved both shots.
After a quiet second quarter, the Sharks came out strong to start the third, as Olton added an insurance goal from Klein-Holte's initial pass. The Seahawks would break through late in the third quarter to pull within one goal.
King had one more shot in the fourth but it was saved by the Seahawks goalkeeper. Wagner made a push try to tie the game, but Vellis and the defense were able to clear the ball before the Seahawks got a shot off.
The Sharks return to action on Sunday for a NEC matchup at Rider on Sunday. Game time at Ben Cohen field is set for 12:00 p.m.
