FORT MYERS, Fla. — The LIU softball team is in the win column in 2023.
The Sharks defeated Binghamton, 4-0, on Saturday morning before falling to host Florida Gulf Coast, 5-3, later in the day.
In the victory, right-hander
Kira Buckner tossed a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts. She required only 85 pitches and faced one over the minimum.
It marked the first shutout of Buckner's career.
Maya Avila staked the Sharks to an early lead with a first-inning RBI double. LIU opened a three-run cushion with fourth-inning runs on
Gabby Padilla's sacrifice fly and
Camryn Lyman's RBI single. Avila scored on a fielder's choice in the seventh to cap the scoring.
Buckner carried a perfect-game bid into the fifth inning, when she surrendered a one-out single to Alex Musial.
"Kira was dominant from start to finish," coach
Roy Kortmann said.
Against host FGCU in Game 2 of the day, LIU jumped to a two-run lead in the top of the first on
Alexia Castro's two-run double to left-center. The lead swelled to 3-0 in the fourth on freshman
Mari Narvaiz's first collegiate homer.
However, FGCU answered with four runs in the bottom half of that frame to take the lead en route to the victory.
LIU (1-3) concludes its season-opening five-game trip to the Sunshine State with another game against host FGCU on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
