FORT MYERS, Fla. — The LIU softball team heads home from the Sunshine State off a hard-luck loss.
Gabby Padilla's two-out RBI single in the top of the sixth drew the Sharks even on Sunday, but host Florida Gulf Coast produced a 4-3 walk-off win an inning later with an unearned run.
The Sharks went 1-4 during the season-opening FGCU Kickoff Classic, earning a win against Binghamton.
In the Sunday finale, LIU had grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning on freshman
Alexia Castro's leadoff homer and Padilla's RBI single.
But FGCU later used a two-run fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
Padilla went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the loss.
Castro slugged her first collegiate homer.
The Sharks head next weekend to Statesboro, Ga., for five games. They will have two games apiece against host Georgia Southern and Radford and a single game against Bryant.
