BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – LIU baseball welcomed Iona to the LIU Baseball Complex on Friday afternoon, defeating the Gaels, 14-4.
Joshua Loeschorn had a career day on the mound, picking up the win and striking out 14 batters, a new career high. With the victory, the Sharks move to 9-8 on the season.
SHARK BITES
- Loeschorn earned the start for the Sharks and was mowing down batters from the beginning of the game. He did not give up a base runner until the top of the sixth, throwing five and two thirds perfect innings, including 10 strikeouts in that span.
- LIU drew first blood in the fourth. Carlton Harper singled and Christopher Wasson doubled to put two runners in scoring position. On a 1-1 count, Seth Surrett slapped a single to right to score two, giving LIU the lead at 2-0.
- The inning continued when Giovanni Ciaccio singled and Michael Edelman was hit by a pitch. EJ Exposito lined a single to center to score both runners and increasing the tally to 4-0.
- In the bottom of the fifth, the Sharks offense picked up where it left off. Harper drew a walk and Wasson singled before Surrett placed a sacrifice bunt down the third base line to advance the runners.
- After the sacrifice, Colin Adams skied a 2-2 fastball to left center for a three-run homerun, his second of the season, to increase the lead to 7-0. Edelman would later double to right to score Ciaccio. It was 8-0, LIU, after the fifth.
- The sixth inning saw more runs cross the plate for the Sharks when Surrett walked with the bases loaded to bring in one. Adams would reach on an error, Ciaccio grounded out on a fielder's choice, and Myles Proctor pinch hit and singled to center to score three more runs, increasing the lead to 13-0.
- Iona's Jennings hit a solo home run in the seventh to score their first run of the game.
- Ciaccio scored his third run of the day in the eighth when he crossed home plate on a passed ball.
- Iona scored one run in the eights and then two more runs in the ninth to bring the final to 14-4.
- Loeschorn earned his fifth win of the season, striking out a career-high 14 batters and only allowing four hits and two earned runs. Paul Sullivan was given the loss.
Up next, the Sharks will play host again on Sunday for a doubleheader against the Gaels beginning at 11:00 a.m.
