BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – LIU baseball hosted Iona on Sunday in its first doubleheader, sweeping the Gaels by winning game one, 12-4, and game two, 6-0. With the victories, the Sharks move to 11-8 on the year and 3-1 at home.
SHARK BITES – LIU 12, IONA 4
- The Sharks got the scoring started early in game one. Michael Edelman singled to center, and EJ Exposito doubled to left to put two runners in scoring position. Luke Turner connected on the first pitch he saw to score both, giving LIU a quick 2-0 lead.
- Iona benefited off a solo homerun from Vincente Mendoza to cut into the deficit. In the bottom of the second, the Sharks put four runs on the board with the scoring starting off a bases loaded walk to Edelman to increase the lead to 3-1.
- Exposito hit a sacrifice fly to shallow right, scoring Myles Proctor. With two runners on, Turner singled to score two more runs, upping the lead to 6-1.
- Jalen Wade earned his first one-two-three inning in the next half to hold firm on the Sharks lead.
- Heading into the bottom of the fourth, Turner got on base and stole second before Carlton Harper notched an RBI single to make it 7-1, LIU.
- The Sharks busted the game open in the bottom of the fifth. On a 1-0 count, Myles Proctor led off and scorched a solo homerun to center, his first of the season, to take an 8-1 lead. Later in the inning, Edelman earned his first RBI on a triple to score Ciaccio. Edelman would later score on a passed ball. Harper registered another RBI on a single to score Exposito. After five, the Sharks led 11-1.
- The Gaels scored two runs in the top of the sixth, narrowing the deficit to 11-3. In the home half of the seventh, Connor Price hit a sacrifice fly to score Wasson. Iona scored the last run of the game in the ninth, bringing the final to 14-4.
- Wade picked up the win after throwing six innings and giving up four hits and two earned runs while striking out six, a season high.
SHARK BITES – LIU 6, IONA 0
- Shane Buehler started the second game of the afternoon for LIU, striking out two in the top of the first. Buehler was able to navigate out of a jam in the second to keep the game scoreless.
- In the home half of the second, Luke Turner singled on a 2-2 count to get on base and Wasson drew a walk to give the Sharks two base runners. After both advanced on a passed ball, Seth Surrett collected two of his four RBIs on a single to center, giving LIU a 2-0 lead.
- In the fourth, Surrett earned another RBI on a single to right, making it 3-0. The inning continued when Proctor was hit by a pitch and Jack Power drew a walk. Ciaccio later reached first on an infield single, making way for Edelman to single to right and score Proctor. Exposito drew a bases loaded walk to bring home another walk. It was 5-0, LIU, after the fourth.
- Going into the fifth inning, the Sharks scored their sixth and final run on another Surrett RBI single. Surrett finished 4-4 with four singles and 4 RBIs, his season high in both categories.
- The Sharks combined to throw four scoreless innings out of the bullpen after Buehler went five innings, giving up three hits and striking out five batters. Ryan Neuweiler threw two perfect innings in relief, keeping the Gaels off the scoreboard.
- Kurt Lange threw an inning of perfect baseball, as well, with two strikeouts in the frame. Josh Gainer came in during the ninth to shut things down, throwing just nine pitches to close down Iona.
- Buehler earned his first win of 2022, and Nick Chiaia was given the loss.
