BRIDGEWATER, N.J. – Following a successful 2-0 weekend at the Butler Invitational, Sara van Gisteren and Yasmeen Muhammad earned NEC weekly honors, the conference announced Tuesday.
 
van Gisteren was named NEC Player of the Week after leading LIU to a 3-2 win over Duke on Sept. 19 with 20 kills. The victory was LIU women's volleyball's second win over a Power 4 opponent in the Sharks era, with the first coming last week against Virginia Tech on Sept. 13. In total for the week, van Gisteren tallied 36 kills, 19 digs, and 10 blocks in wins over Duke (Sept. 19) and Butler (3-0, Sept. 20).
 
Muhammad was named NEC Defensive Player of the Week with 17 kills and 14 blocks through the two wins. She had seven blocks in each victory, marking a new season-high.
 
The Sharks will return to play on Wednesday, Sept. 23, visiting Saint Peter's at 6 p.m.
