BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Long Island University men's basketball team (21-10, 15-3 NEC) wrapped up the regular season with a strong second half against FDU on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Knights 74-60.
LIU jumped out to an early 17-6 lead on Saturday, with a layup by senior Greg Gordon putting the Sharks up by 11 with 9:59 left in the first half. While the Sharks led early, FDU stormed back to cut the lead to just one point with a three-pointer in the final seconds of the opening half, as LIU took a 31-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Early shots allowed the Knights to take a brief lead, but back-to-back three pointers by junior Mason Porter-Brown and graduate student Jamal Fuller put the Sharks back ahead with 15:27 remaining.
LIU and FDU traded leads four times over the next four minutes of play, but a jump shot by Gordon put LIU ahead for good. A pair of ferocious dunks by Gordon later gave the Sharks breathing room, as LIU rode out to its eventual 14-point home victory.
Fuller led LIU with 17 points, while Gordon (14), junior Jomo Goings (12), and Porter-Brown (11) all finished in double figures. Goings paced the Sharks in rebounds with six, while Gordon recorded a game-high six assists.
LIU, the NEC regular season champion, will host the quarterfinal of the NEC Men's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. LIU's opponent will be the No. 8 seed in the tournament.
