CHICAGO — The Long Island University men's basketball team (8-7, 2-0 NEC) led wire-to-wire in its win over Chicago State University (2-13, 0-2 NEC) on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Cougars 74-55 on the road.
LIU led by as many as 11 points in the first half, through Chicago State managed to cut the Shark lead to 23-21 with under six minutes left in the first half. Despite the Cougar scoring run, LIU responded by outscoring Chicago State 14-6 down the stretch of the opening half.
A three-pointer by junior Jomo Goings put LIU up 42-31 just over a minute into the second half, as the Sharks were able to maintain that double-digit lead throughout the rest of the game.
Graduate student Jamal Fuller finished with a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds, while Goings (15 points), senior Greg Gordon, and junior Faheim Meran (11) all recorded double-digit points. Fuller also paced the Sharks in blocks and steals, finishing with two each.
LIU hosts Mercyhurst on Thursday, January 8, at 7 p.m.
