SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Long Island University softball team (24-21, 16-5 Northeast Conference) fell 2-1 in a non-conference matchup against Seton Hall University (29-20, 11-10 Big East) on Wednesday afternoon, its final game of the regular season.
Seton Hall took a 1-0 lead in the ballgame with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning, though the Sharks would respond to tie the game off an RBI single by sophomore Kaylee Clarkson that sent home graduate student Dallas Andrews. However, the Pirates took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the same inning off a sacrifice fly, holding on to the lead for the win.
Clarkson, senior Alyssa Polemeni and junior Alyssa Garcia each recorded one hit in Wednesday's contest, while sophomore Sophia Mariottini, junior Sarah Wall and senior Alyssa O'Donnell all saw time in the circle. Mariottini led the Sharks with three strikeouts, followed by two by Wall. The decision went to O'Donnell, who now stands with a 6-3 pitching record this season. LIU left nine Pirate baserunners stranded on base in the game.
LIU, the NEC regular season champion, will host the NEC Championship beginning May 8 at the LIU Softball Complex in Brooklyn. While game times have not been released, the Sharks will take on No. 4 seed Central Connecticut State in the first round.
