SYRACUSE, N.Y. - After falling in Saturday's matchup against the Dolphins, the Long Island University softball team responded with two wins over Le Moyne College on Sunday, claiming wins by scores of 9-7 and 17-5.
In the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader, the Sharks overcame a two-run Le Moyne lead twice; once in the top of the third inning to tie the game at two, and again in the top of the fourth inning, when sophomore Lily Hinkle gave LIU a 5-3 lead with a two-RBI double. LIU then scored two more runs in the top of the fourth to claim an 8-4 lead, eventually winning the game 9-7.
Junior Alyssa Garcia went 4-4 at the plate in the win, while senior Alyssa Polemeni led LIU with four RBI, two of which came on a two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Alyssa O'Donnell earned the win in the circle, while sophomore Sophia Mariottini was awarded with the save.
The Sharks scored early and often in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader, jumping out to a 10-2 lead through the first two innings – LIU's first run of the day came off a two-run homer by graduate student Dallas Andrews in the top of the first inning to spark the scoring barrage. LIU's bats stayed alive throughout the game, racking up 18 hits in a 17-5 win over the Dolphins, with the game ending after the fifth inning.
Hinkle and sophomore Kaylee Clarkson, the two most recent NEC Softball Player of the Week award recipients, tied for a team-high three hits apiece in the win, while sophomore Jen Rodriguez drove in a team-high four RBI in the nightcap. Junior Sarah Wall pitched all five innings, surrendering seven hits with three earned runs, striking out five batters and earning the win.
LIU travels to the Bronx on Wednesday for a standalone game against Fordham University. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
With Sunday's wins, LIU improves to 18-18 overall and 12-3 in Northeast Conference play. The Sharks stand atop the NEC standings, a game ahead of Fairleigh Dickinson University.
