Garrett Yawn Strikes Out 11, LIU Rolls Past FDU 6-1

Sharks’ ace extends scoreless streak to 15 innings; Rivera tallies three RBIs in 6-0 win

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Garrett Yawn, the most dominant pitcher in the Northeast Conference and reigning NEC Pitcher of the Week, pitched another gem, lifting the LIU baseball team to a 6-1 win over FDU on a rainy Friday afternoon at the LIU Baseball Stadium.

Yawn struck out 11 batters over seven scoreless innings and won his sixth straight game after another outstanding outing for the Sharks.

The senior ace has now struck out 23 batters in 15 scoreless innings for LIU as the Sharks (16-16, 10-3)  won game one of their three-game series against the Knights.

LIU was also sharp offensively — giving Yawn plenty to work with in the Sharks' series-opening win.

Ryan Rivera drove in the first run of the game with an RBI double to center in the fourth inning to put the Sharks ahead 1-0.

Freshman Mason Brenton then followed with an RBI single to right field to extend LIU's lead to 2-0.

Jarod Wade laid down a timely sacrifice bunt to drive in a run during the Sharks' three-run fourth inning.

Jack Power, who was stellar defensively at second base, finished the game with a hit and an RBI with a sacrifice fly to push LIU ahead 4-0.

Rivera capped his multi-hit, three-RBI day by driving in a pair of runs in the seventh inning to give the Sharks a 6-0 lead.

RJ Latkowski and Evan Panjawni each pitched a scoreless inning of relief, recording a strikeout apiece.

Chandler Ketchup and Jacob Pipercic each finished the game with two hits. Pipercic also stole two bases.

LIU and FDU will play a doubleheader on Sunday. Game 1 is scheduled for 12 p.m.
