Ashley Morrow's and
Crosby Wildfong's first-period goals provided the winning spark in LIU's 4-0 win over Saint Michael's in Game 1 of the NEWHA quarterfinals at the Northwell Health Ice Center.
Morrow opened the scoring on the power play to give LIU a 1-0 lead. Just 52 seconds later, Wildfong netted her first career goal, extending the Sharks' lead to 2-0.
Jeannie Waller, who was named First Team All-NEWHA on Friday, made it 3-0 with a net-front scramble goal 12:34 into the second period.
Captain
Sarah Rourke added to the lead less than two minutes later, notching her 11th goal of the season and the 25th of her career to put LIU ahead 4-0.
Graduate student goaltender
Abbie Thompson, who led the conference with 18 regular-season wins, delivered another stellar performance for LIU.
Thompson stopped 13 shots and secured her fourth shutout of the year, including her second against Saint Michael's this season.
The two teams will meet again at the Northwell Health Ice Center for Game 2 of the best-of-three NEWHA quarterfinal series.
