EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — For the third straight season, the LIU women's hockey team has earned the No. 1 seed in the NEWHA Tournament. The top-seeded Sharks will host Saint Michael's in a best-of-three quarterfinal round starting Friday at 2 p.m. at the Northwell Health Ice Center.
LIU, which secured its third consecutive NEWHA Regular Season Title with a 2-1 win over Saint Anselm on Feb. 21, finished with a conference-high 57 points and 19 wins. The Sharks now hold a 62-12-8 conference record under third-year head coach
Kelly Nash—the highest winning percentage of any NEWHA head coach from 2022-25.
"Clinching first speaks to the consistency of an entire season, said head coach
Kelly Nash. This was a huge accomplishment for us this year. There is nothing like getting to play at home and we are looking forward to the upcoming challenge.
LIU takes the ice for Game 1 against Saint Michael's on Friday, Feb. 28, followed by Game 2 on Saturday against the Purple Knights. Game 3 (if necessary) would be played on Sunday. All quarterfinal games are scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
LIU last won the NEWHA Tournament during the 2022-23 season and went on to play eventual National Champion Wisconsin in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
