EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — Sam Mathe's first collegiate goal provided the spark the LIU women's hockey team needed in a 5-3 win over Post University, as the Sharks secured their 10th home win of the season in their regular-season home finale.
Mathe netted LIU's first goal late in the opening period, tying the game at 1-1.
Grace Babington then gave LIU a 2-1 lead, scoring with 58 seconds remaining in the first frame.
Sarah Rourke extended the Sharks' advantage with two third-period goals, including one on the power play, as LIU pulled ahead 4-1.
Anya Weilandt sealed the win with a late goal in regulation, securing LIU's 18th win of the season, the most in the NEWHA.
Goaltender Abbie Thompson stopped 19 shots, earning her 17th win of the season. She entered the game ranked 16th in the NCAA in winning percentage.
The Sharks and Eagles conclude their two-game series on Friday in Waterbury, Conn.
