EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - Senior defender Emma Mörtl of the Long Island University women's ice hockey team was named New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday. Mörtl finished the week with a goal, an assist, and five blocked shots. This is Mörtl's third career defensive player of the week award.

In Friday night's 3-1 win at Post University, Mörtl scored a goal, her second of the season, and recorded her first assist of the year, along with three blocked shots.

In Saturday night's 5-3 win over Post at home, Mörtl added another two blocked shots to her stat line.

Mörtl is the first LIU player to receive defensive player of the week honors from NEWHA this season and the second to earn a weekly award. Junior goalie Clara Kammholz was named NEWHA Goaltender of the Week on Sept. 30 after the season's opening weekend.

The Sharks return to action on Friday, Dec. 12, at Robert Morris University, in the first game of a weekend pair against the Colonials in Moon Township, Pennsylvania. Puck drop on Friday is scheduled for 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13.
