LIU Erupts for 8 Goals, Downs Assumption at Home

Onni Leppänen scores twice as Sharks net season high

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - The Long Island University men's ice hockey team (7-9-0) scored a season high eight goals as the Sharks downed Assumption University (6-6-1), 8-3, on Friday afternoon at the Northwell Health Ice Center.

LIU stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the first period on goals by Onni Leppänen (1:49), Daniel Baldassarra (7:17), Anthony Lucarelli (10:43), and John McMahon (18:57).

The lead stretched to 5-0 at 5:41 of the second period when Isaac Lambert found the back of the net.

After allowing a power play goal, cutting LIU's lead to 5-1, the Sharks rattled off another three consecutive goals. J.R Perdion (16:11, 2nd), Leppänen (2:11, 3rd), and Dylan Kinch (PP, 10:41, 3rd) stretched the lead to 8-1, before Assumption netted a pair of goals in a 19 second span in the game's final minutes.

The eight-goal performance was the most goals scored in a single game by LIU since a 14-goal outburst in a 14-1 win over Saint Anselm College last January.

Leppänen and Lucarelli each tallied a game-high three points.

Daniel Duris started at goaltender for LIU, saving all six shots faced in the first period. Carter Bickle played the duration of the second period, stopping five shots. Lukas Renaud made four saves, anchoring the net for the Sharks in the third period.

LIU outshot Assumption, 52-18, and won 34 of 53 faceoffs. The Sharks went 1-for-2 on the power play.

LIU returns to action on Saturday, December 13, at Merrimack College. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m.
