BROOKLYN, N.Y. — As Shark Weekend continues in Brooklyn, the women's basketball team will host Chicago State on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m.
With the two NEC rivals set to face off, it'll be a rematch of a Jan. 4 matchup that saw the Sharks fall to the Cougars in a tightly-fought 64-59 overtime contest. LIU will seek out redemption somewhere they've already found success over the course of this season. Boasting a 5-6 record in Brooklyn thus far, the Sharks have already matched their home-win total from last season.
Sirviva Legions was a standout performer in the last game between these two teams, scoring 16 points in a season-high 42 minutes for LIU. The junior is the Sharks' leading scorer this season with 13.8 points per game (good for fifth-best in the conference), and was most recently named an NEC Prime Performer this week after scoring 18 points in her team's most recent win, a 63-56 victory over Saint Francis on Jan. 23.
Janessa Williams has also played a steady role in pacing the Sharks as of late, averaging 15.5 points and 9.8 rebounds in her last four games. Such a streak has included two double-doubles, and a season-high 19 point performance against Mercyhurst on Jan. 20. Her ability to crash the boards has earned her the third-best mark in the conference at 7.4 rebounds per game. In addition, freshman Brianna Mead has also reached double-figures in each of her last two games for LIU, averaging 13.5 points, 4.5 assists, and 2.5 steals. Now averaging 1.4 steals on the campaign, Mead is ranked fifth in the NEC.
Be sure to ride the wave as Shark Weekend continues, with LIU hosting Chicago State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
