EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The LIU men's hockey team's record start continued with a program-record 10 goals, against Assumption, improving to a perfect 6-0 on home ice at the Northwell Health Ice Center.
LIU scored six goals in the third period, the most goals in a single period in program history.
The Sharks also scored four goals in two minutes and thirteen seconds — the quickest four goals ever scored by LIU.
Chad Muller and Sixten Jennersjö scored first-period goals less than two minutes apart, giving LIU an early 2-0 lead. Muller's tally marked his first as a Shark. The Sharks' winger finished the game with two goals.
Daniel Baldassara extended LIU's lead to 3-0 in the second period with his first goal of the season on the power play — LIU's 17th man-up goal this season.
Carter Rapalje, the reigning NCAA Division I Independent Hockey Player of the Month for December, scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season, putting the Sharks ahead 4-0.
Isaac Lambert scored a pair of third-period goals, while Nick Bernardo, Austin Brimmer, and Brennan Nelson also found the back of the net. Nelson's tally was the first of his LIU career.
The Sharks surpassed the 50-goal mark in their 12th win through their first 19 games. LIU netminder Noah Rupprecht stopped 13 shots, earning his fifth win of the season.
The Sharks return to action Saturday at 8 p.m. against Saint Anselm.
