EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The LIU women's hockey team's season ended in heartbreaking fashion Saturday night.
The top-seeded and reigning NEWHA champion Sharks had a two-goal lead erased in the final 2:09 of regulation, then fell in overtime, 4-3, on Saturday night at Northwell Health Ice Center.
The game's officials reviewed Grace Schuck's game-winning goal to determine whether the play was onside, and ultimately affirmed the goal.
Fifth-seeded Franklin Pierce advances to face third-seeded Stonehill in next Saturday's NEWHA championship game. The Skyhawks defeated second-seeded Saint Anselm, 3-2 in overtime, on Saturday afternoon in the other NEWHA semifinal.
Against Franklin Pierce, LIU jumped to a 3-1 lead on goals from
Ryane Kearns,
Ashley Morrow and
Mikayla Lantto.
However, with their net empty, the Ravens scored a pair of goals 33 seconds apart in the final 2:09 of regulation to force overtime.
