EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — Milana Butera and
Carrigan Umpherville's third-period heroics lifted LIU to a 3-2 victory over Sacred Heart in the Sharks' first matchup of the season against the Pioneers.
Bri Eid found the back of the net 5:09 into the second period to break the scoreless tie and put LIU ahead 1-0.
The Pioneers responded with two goals of their own, taking a 2-1 lead into the third period.
That's when the Sharks came to life. Butera scored 1:36 into the third period to tie the game. Umpherville then followed up two minutes later, scoring to give LIU a 3-2 lead and sealing the win for the Sharks in the first game of their two-game weekend series against the Pioneers.
Abbie Thompson was solid in net for the Sharks, with the graduate student making 20 saves in LIU's third win of the season.
Anna Fairman led the team defensively, blocking a team-high four shots.
The Sharks and Pioneers face off again on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart.
