ELMONT, N.Y. —The LIU women's hockey team is actively dedicated to fostering the development of girls' and women's hockey on Long Island.

On Wednesday the Sharks attended the inaugural Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) game on Long Island at UBA Arena, where New York faced off against Montreal, drawing a crowd of nearly 3,000 fans.

Tindra Holm, LIU's accomplished goaltender, watched closely with aspirations of extending her hockey career beyond her current role as a student-athlete.

"Having trained and competed against some of the PWHL players before, it's commendable to see them recognized for their dedication," said Holm, the 2023 NEWHA Goaltender of the Year. "I've always harbored the goal of playing professionally post-graduation, and the emergence of the PWHL presents an additional level to strive for."

The PWHL, in its inaugural season, consists of six teams—three in the United States and three in Canada, comprising rosters rich in former NCAA talent.

"There has been considerable anticipation surrounding the launch of the PWHL, and I am pleased our team had the opportunity to witness it firsthand at UBS," said head coach Kelly Nash, who played three seasons of professional hockey before starting her coaching career. "A lot of student-athletes have aspirations to play hockey at the next level and tonight they had the opportunity to see some really great women's ice hockey."

New York next plays at UBS Arena Feb.21 against Montreal. In the meantime, LIU returns to the Northwell Health Ice Center on Saturday and Sunday against Franklin Pierce.
