Alan Martinez Stakes Men's Soccer to Early Lead, but Monmouth Rallies in Second Half

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — The LIU men's soccer team raced to a one-goal lead, scoring 90 seconds into Monday's match on a goal by Alan Martinez.

However, bidding for a second straight victory on the home field of a Colonial Athletic Association opponent to open the season, the Hawks answered with three second-half goals and defeated the Sharks, 3-1, at Hesse Field on the Great Lawn.

Monmouth outshot LIU 18-8.

The Sharks did not produce a corner kick during the match.

Martinez's goal came via assists from Ethan Homler and Robert Winkler in the second minute.

Ben Zakowski had goals for Monmouth in the 63rd and 68th minutes to give the Hawks the lead.

LIU next faces UConn on Friday night in Storrs, Conn.
