BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Reigning NEC Pitcher of the Week
Garrett Yawn continued his strong pitching and
Jake Mastillo resumed his home run barrage for the LIU baseball team on Sunday.
Yawn tossed six scoreless innings and combined with
Ty McInnes on the shutout and Mastillo drove in the opening two runs as the Sharks defeated Coppin State, 6-0, in the rubber game at the LIU Baseball Stadium.
LIU won its sixth straight NEC series.
Yawn limited the Eagles to three hits while striking out eight in a career-high 121-pitch performance. He was coming off his first career complete game in a 5-1 win at Delaware State a week earlier.
McInnes followed with three scoreless relief innings to earn the save.
Mastillo produced an RBI single in the first inning and then lined a solo homer to right-center in the fifth to stake the Sharks to a 2-0 lead.
Mastillo now has an NEC-leading 14 homers — topping Braves farmhand
EJ Exposito's total a year ago with LIU for the most in a single season in the Sharks era. The program record is 18, which belongs to Lou Deman (1995) with LIU Brooklyn and James Ruocchio (1991) and Jaimie Braverman (1981) with LIU Post.
