BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The LIU men's tennis team hosted outdoor matches on campus for the first time this spring. And the result was a sweeping success on Friday as LIU extended its winning streak to six matches.
The Sharks defeated Rider, 4-2, in the morning, then topped NEC opponent Wagner, 4-3, a handful of hours later.
Against Rider, the Sharks dropped a tightly contested point after the winner-take-all second doubles went to a ill-fated tiebreaker.
LIU then responded, getting wins from
Philip Hilble at first singles,
Ales D'Anna at fourth singles,
Akhil Indrabalan at fifth singles and
Lucas Hornung at sixth singles.
Later, against Wagner, the Sharks again rallied after dropping the doubles point, with Hilble at first singles,
Sergio Fernandez Romera at third singles, D'Anna at fourth singles and
Gui Medeiros at fifth singles earning wins.
The Sharks are next in action Tuesday at Fairleigh Dickinson.
"It was a challenging day at the office today playing a doubleheader in some pretty difficult weather conditions, but we are proud of the guys for stepping up and getting it done and extending our winning streak to six," coach
Jan Griga said. "We came out strong across the board in singles today, but have some work to do on the doubles court before we face off against FDU on Tuesday."
