BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A strong weekend in South Carolina has led to a pair of NEC weekly awards for the LIU softball team on Tuesday.
Kira Buckner has been named NEC Pitcher of the Week, while
Mari Narvaiz in the NEC Rookie of the Week.
Buckner, a junior right-hander from Round Lake, Ill., struck out a program-record 11 straight batters during a 13-strikeout, one-hit shutout against Fordham on Sunday.
Narvaiz, a freshman second baseman from Albuquerque, N.M., hit .333 (6-for-18) with two homers and four RBIs in five games at the Winthrop-hosted weekend tournament.
The Sharks produced a pair of wins against North Carolina Central and also defeated Fordham and Harvard during the trip.

The Sharks again head south on Thursday, this time for 11 games in Madeira Beach, Fla. LIU opens with games against UAlbany and Yale on Friday.
