DENVER — Head coach
Michael Mordocco had his team encircle him after the completion of Thursday's opening-round NCAA Tournament match.
"I am proud," Mordocco said, "of the performance you just put on."
The LIU men's soccer team stung Denver for the match's opening goal during the second half. However, the host school rallied with a pair of late goals to defeat the Sharks, 2-1, in the tourney's opening round at Ciber Field.
The opening goal came on a header from NEC Player of the Year
Emil Jaaskelainen in the 67th minute on a free kick from
Alan Martinez.
It was the identical connection — down to the header itself — that had allowed LIU to top Sacred Heart, 1-0, in Sunday's conference final.
However, Denver scored goals in the 80th and 83rd minutes to earn the win.
LIU completed its season 10-6-3 overall.
