Camelia Melendez Named NEC Player of Week, Alasha Colon Receives Third Defensive Player of Week Honor

BROOKLYN, N.Y. The LIU women's volleyball team went on the road this weekend and dominated, sweeping both of its conference matchups against Le Moyne and Saint Francis U. Camelia Melendez and Alasha Colon were integral in the victories.
 
On Tuesday, Melendez was named NEC Women's Volleyball Player of the Week and Colon grabbed her third Defensive Player of the Week honor. Both were also named Prime Performer for the week along with Amaris Smith and Selina Koç.
 
Melendez, a Caguas, P.R. native, was one of the most important players on both sides of the ball for the Sharks last weekend. She recorded a team high 21 kills while also adding five service aces and 13 digs in two matches.
 
On Saturday against Saint Francis U, Melendez posted a phenomenal .429 hitting percentage.
 
Melendez, the LIU leader in kills and points, is third in the NEC with 177 kills and fourth in points with 193.
 
Colon tallied 35 more digs over the weekend bringing her season total to 350. She is first in the NEC and third in Division I in total digs as well as first in the NEC in digs per set and second in the country with 5.93.
 
The Sharks looks to extend their conference win streak when they travel to play Farleigh Dickinson on Saturday at 5 p.m.
