SYOSSET, N.Y. — The LIU men's tennis team got back into the swing of action on Friday at Sportime Syosset.
The Sharks fell to St. John's, 6-1, in their first match of the spring semester.
LIU last had been in action Nov. 11-13 at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md.
Against the Red Storm, LIU first-doubles tandem
Philip Hilble and
Arthur Voiseux appeared poised to rally for a victory. However, the match was halted with the Sharks leading 6-5 because the other two doubles matches had been claimed by St. John's.
In singles action,
Sergio Fernandez Romera prevailed over Nishant Dabas at third singles, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5-0), 1-0 (10-7).
Arthur Voiseux at fourth singles also went to a tiebreaker after splitting his first two sets with Giuseppe De Camelis at fourth singles. De Camelis claimed that match with a 10-5 tiebreaker victory.
"I'm happy with the way we played today," coach
Jan Griga said. "St. John's is a strong team, and we made them earn every single point. The guys rose to the occasion in a big way and played good, aggressive tennis in both singles and doubles, with great energy throughout. It was a solid performance overall and a good prep for our match against Siena this Sunday."
