Mentality Monsters; Softball is Headed to the Ship

LORETTO, Penn. – The LIU softball team was forced to split the play of game five agains Mount St. Mary's over two days when the weather in Pennsylvania decided to unleash rain and thunder over the field at Saint Francis U.

Despite the delay in play, the Sharks came back into it with a fighting mentality and added six runs to their 2-0 lead they accumulated on Friday, winning the game 8-3 over the Mountaineers.

Camryn Lyman, who was at bat with a 2-2 count in the top of the fifth when the game was called last night, stepped back into the box this morning and swung at the first pitch she saw, slipping one through the middle for a lead-off single to set the tone for the morning.

The senior would go on to score the first run of the morning when Maya Avila singled her home. Over the course of the split game Lyman accumulated three hits and scored two runs.

The icing on the cake though was when Victoria Zatko stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh. In what seemed to be a recurring theme Saturday morning, the transfer from La Salle swung hard on the first pitch that came her way and hit one deep to right center for a double, scoring two more runs for the Sharks to leave no doubt they intended to

First pitch for the Championship game against No. 1 Saint Francis is set for 12:02 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and on NEC Front Row as well.
