Box Score NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Two solo home runs and a pair of wild pitches that saw the Sharks steal two runs had the LIU softball team taking game three over Central Connecticut State 9-5 on Sunday.
With LIU already up 5-1, the first solo homer came in the top of the third from
Alyssa Polemeni and the second was courtesy of
Maya Avila in the top of the fourth, putting the Sharks up 6-1 and then 7-1 over the hosting Blue Devils.
Even with a three-run home run from CCSU in the bottom of the fifth, LIU remained unphased by the late pushback and even scored another run in the top of the seventh to take a 9-4 lead. The Blue Devils scored another in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough of a rally to overtake the Sharks, and the game finished 9-5 to the visitors.
The pitching lineup was starter
Alyssa O'Donnell, followed by
Desiree Smith coming in as a reliever. O'Donnell earned the win and exited the game midway through the fourth after striking out two batters. Smith came in to pitch the final two innings and struck out two batters as well to finish off the game strong.
The Sharks will be in Hackensack, New Jersey on Saturday, taking on the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson University in a double header. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
