Softball Takes on Central Michigan in Double Header

Box Score MAREIRA BEACH, Fla. – The LIU softball team was back in action today at the Spring Games, taking on Central Michigan University in a double header that saw the Sharks fall 5-1, 6-1 to the Chippewas.

SHARK BITES
GAME ONE – CMU 5, LIU 1
  • The scoring started early, with Central Michigan scoring two in the bottom of the first, LIU getting one back in the top of the second, and then the Chippewas cut out any doubt of their lead with a three-run bottom of the fourth to make the tally that would carry through to the end of the game, 5-1.
  • The Chippewas earned their two runs in the first off of two hits.
  • The Sharks jumped onto the board with their sole run of the game in the top of the second. Ciara Granado singled before Gabby Padilla was hit by a pitch and a Victoria Zatko sacrifice bunt pushed both Granado and Padilla ahead one base. A Kristen Blanchard single would be what scored Granado before a Katie Hinkle ground out ended the inning.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, CMU gained three more runs off the Sharks with two hits and two errors, leaving one Chippewa left on base and push the score to 5-1.
  • Alyssa O'Donnell had the loss on the mound for the Sharks in game one.

GAME TWO – CMU 6, LIU 1
  • The Sharks got on the board first in the second game of the day, scoring in the bottom of the second, but in the top of the third the Chippewas came back and scored two, to take the 2-1 lead and hold onto that until the top of the sixth. CMU then scored another in the top of the sixth and three more unanswered in the top of the seventh to claim the 6-1 win over LIU.
  • In the bottom of the first, the Sharks struck. Angelina Reno reached first on an error followed by Kiana Cisneros singling to left field and with Kristen Blanchard singling, and advancing Cisneros to third while getting the RBI when Reno scored. The Sharks earned this run on two hits and an error, leaving two on base.
  • In the third, CMU earned their two runs on three hits to lead 2-1 before grabbing another in the sixth on a home run. In the seventh, the Chippewas scored three more on three hits to grab the 6-1 lead that they would hold onto through the final inning.
  • Desiree Smith had the loss on the mound for LIU.

The Sharks will be back in action against Western Michigan and Toledo on Thursday, March 10 at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
