SHARKS WIN! Softball Splits Saturday Play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Saturday was day two of the Spring Games and the LIU softball team split their results for the day, dropping 5-4 to Middle Tennessee State and taking the 5-1 W over UAlbany.
 
SHARK BITES – MTSU 5, LIU 4
  • Nothing was going for either team until a high scoring third inning came along where LIU scored three and MTSU scored four to take the lead 4-3. The Sharks would score again in the fourth to tie it all up but MTSU was able to get across the plate again in the fifth and take the 5-4 lead to win it.
  • In the top of the third, LIU would strike first for the game when Kristen Blanchard reached first on an error. When Victoria Zatko was walked, Blanchard advanced to second. Camryn Lyman singled down the third base line and pushed Zatko to second and Blanchard to third. From there, Maya Avila got out with a sac fly and Lyman pushed to second, Zatko to third on an error, and Blanchard score the first run.
  • Kiana Cisneros then singled and Lyman made it to third while Zatko scored the second run. Cisneros advanced to second on the throw while Lyman scored on the passed ball, to have the Sharks leading 3-0 after 2.5 innings.
  • Middle Tennessee would score four runs on five hits, leaving two on base, in the bottom of the third to lead 4-3.
  • In the top of the fourth, Ryleigh Bermea would start the inning with a double before on a Katie Hinkle sac fly pushed Bermea to third advance to third on the throw. Gabby Padilla would then fly out to center field, scoring Bermea. The Sharks drew level with MTSU at 4-4.
  • In the bottom of the fifth is when MTSU would retake the lead that won them the game. They earned a run off of two hits and left two on base to edge ahead of the Sharks 5-4.
  • The matchup resulted in a loss on the mound for Elena Valenzuela.
 
SHARK BITES – LIU 5, UALBANY 2
  • The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth when UAlbany struck first to go ahead 1-0. The Sharks wouldn't be behind for long though when a five-run bottom of the sixth propelled them ahead 5-1. The Great Danes would get another back in the top of the seventh, when they got a home run to put the score a 5-2, but LIU were able to hold onto the 5-2 win.
  • UAlbany got on the board first after starting the inning with a triple and going ahead 1-0.
  • The Sharks were able to quickly take back the lead when Ciara Granado was walked and Kiana Cisneros singled and pushed Granado to second. Gabby Padilla singled and then the bases were loaded with one out for Victoria Zatko when she stepped up to the plate. Zatko would hit a triple down the right field line to push three runs across the plate to lead 3-1. Camryn Lyman would then single down the right field line to score Zatko.
  • Alyssa Polemeni would single and Lyman would advance to second. Ryleigh Bermea then walked, pushing each of the other runners on base ahead one. When Maya Avila flied out to center field, Lyman scored for the RBI and put the Sharks up 5-1 on five hits.
  • In the top of the seventh, UAlbany would get one run back on two hits to settle the score at 5-2, Sharks.
  • Priscilla Gillies would earn the win on the mound for LIU, pitching the entire seven innings. 
  • Up next, the Sharks are taking on Radford University and Georgetown University on Sunday, March 6 at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
