BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU men's ice hockey team has continued to make its mark in the professional ranks as
Tyler Welsh and
Jake Stevens have signed contracts in the East Coast Hockey League. After these moves, that makes seven totally members of the 2021-22 Sharks senior class that have signed professional contracts, the most in LIU history.
"We could not be more excited and prouder of Tyler and Jake," said head coach
Brett Riley. "These two young men helped lead our program to another level in our second season."
The Newfoundland Growlers signed Welsh after producing at a high level for the Sharks last season, leading the team in assists with 18. Welsh also contributed seven goals with his season high coming against Miami (OH) on November 26, 2021. Additionally, Welsh earned at least one assist in the last four games of the season.
"Tyler's hockey sense, skill and relentless work-ethic will make him a welcomed addition to Newfoundland," said Riley.
Stevens inked a deal with the Iowa Heartlanders, affiliates of the Minnesota Wild of the NHL. In 2021-22, Stevens played in all 34 games, scoring four goals and picking up 14 assists to total 18 points. The Naperville, Ill. Native earned his career high in assists with three against Assumption on October 22, 2021.
"Jake's skating, offensive instincts, ability to defend and competitive nature will make him an immediate fan favorite in Iowa," said Riley.
"That makes for 7 pro signings in our senior class, and it is a testament to the graduating class and the incredible impact they had in such a short period of time for our building program."
