BROOKLYN, N.Y. – In game one of the three-game series against Bryant, the LIU softball team waited out a three-hour rain delay at the end of the fifth inning to hold off the Bulldogs and take the game with a 6-5 victory.
SHARK BITES
- The Bulldogs got on the board first and early, taking two runs off of four hits in the first inning. Before the Sharks could respond, Bryant added another in the second off of a solo home run to lead 3-0. A five-run bottom of the second though saw LIU take their lead thanks to four hits and two errors. Nothing was going for either team until the bottom of the fourth when the Sharks added another run to lead 6-3. Another Bryant homerun in the top of the fifth saw the Bulldogs within one before a three-hour weather delay interrupted play. The score would remain 6-5 through seven to see the Sharks take the first victory of the series.
- The Sharks runs in the bottom of the second all came in with two outs, and started when Victoria Zatko singled through the left side to score Kristen Blanchard, who got on base with her own single through the left side. Rylie Bermea grabbed an RBI with a single to center when Camryn Lyman, who reached on a fielding error, made her way across the plate. Ciara Granado then got on base with a single to third that scored Zatko and put Bermea in position to score on second. Bermea and Granado would then both score off of a Kiana Cisneros double to center field to lead 5-3 before the inning was final.
- It would be Bermea across the plate again for the sixth and final run of the afternoon. After getting on base with a single to center, Maya Avila would drive her home and nab an RBI for herself.
- Kira Buckner got the win for the Sharks on the mound and Alyssa O'Donnell earned the save.
- In the top of the fifth, Bryant pushed back with a two-run home run to have them trailing by just one at 6-5, but it seemed that the bats cooled off after the delay of play and neither team would make it home again.
Due to the weather delay, the Sharks schedule has changed, and they will now be playing the Bulldogs in a double header on Sunday, March 27 starting at 11 a.m.
