Softball Battles Jacksonville

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The LIU softball team took on Jacksonville in the first day of the FAU Strikeout Cancer Tournament, falling to the Dolphins, 6-1.
 
SHARK BITES
  • The game was a pitcher's duel for the first four and a half innings, as the two teams were limited to a combined four hits over those frames.
  • The Sharks broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Ryleigh Bermea led off with a single, and was advanced on a sac bunt from Katie Hinkle. Bermea would come home when Gabby Padilla doubled down the left field line to put LIU up, 1-0.
  • The Dolphins would answer in the top of the sixth. Despite a double play that got two runners out, Jacksonville would score an unearned run on an RBI single to tie it up, 1-1.
  • The Dolphins scored the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh inning. Two singles and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out, and a long double to center field scored three runs to vault Jacksonville on top, 4-1. Two more runs would score before the Sharks got the final out, giving the visitors a 6-1 lead.
  • LIU got a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but the the Dolphins got the needed out to end the game and take the 6-1 win.
  • Alyssa O'Donnell had the start on the mound, pitching 5.0 scoreless innings, and holding JU to just three hits. Senior Elena Valenzuela (1-4) had the loss for LIU.
  • Up next, the Sharks take on Kentucky and Columbia in Saturday action, at 9 and 11:30 a.m.
