SHARKS WIN! Softball Beats Santa Clara 8-2 for Split Friday

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The LIU softball team notched its first win of the season Friday, beating Santa Clara 8-2 in the first game of the day, before falling to Cal State Fullerton, 9-2 in game two.

SHARK BITES – LIU 8, Santa Clara 2
  • The first three innings of game one were a defensive battle, as neither team would score a run. LIU's infielders stranded seven Santa Clara baserunners in that span to keep things scoreless.
  • The Sharks got on the board in the top of the fourth. Camryn Lyman led off with a double down the right field line, and moved to third on a sac bunt from Kiana Cisneros. A single up the middle from Ciara Granado made itt 1-0 for the Sharks. Ryleigh Bermea added a double to put Granado in scoring position, and they both came home on Katie Hinkle's at bat. Hinkle hit a long single that scored both runners, to make it 3-0 LIU.
  • In the top of the sixth, LIU added one run on an RBI single from Victoria Zatko to put the Sharks up, 4-0.
  • LIU tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh. Kristen Blanchard had a lead-off double, and runs were scored on RBI singles from Priscilla Gillies and Cisneros. An RBI sac fly for Bermea made it 7-0, and Hinkle's RBI single made it 8-0 Sharks.
  • Santa Clara would score two in the bottom of the seventh, on two hits and an error, but it wasn't enough, and the Sharks took the 8-2 win.
  • Hinkle finished game one 2-for-3 at the plate, with three RBI.
  • Pitcher Elena Valenzuela (1-2) had the complete game win on the mound, holding Santa Clara to just four hits over 7.0 innings, with five strikeouts and just one earned run.

SHARK BITES – CSF 9, LIU 2
  • LIU got on the board first in game two, scoring a run in the top of the second. With two outs and Hinkle on first, Samantha Garcia was walked, and an RBI single from Gabby Padilla brought Hinkle home from second, to make it 1-0.
  • Cal State got on the board in a big way in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs on five hits and an error to go up, 6-1.
  • LIU would close the gap with a run scored in the top of the fourth, this time on an RBI single from Zatko that scored Hinkle, cutting it to 6-2.
  • But the Titans would add two more in the bottom of the frame to widen the lead to 8-2, and a run in the bottom of the fifth made it 9-2. LIU wouldn't score again, and the Titans took the win.

Up next, the Sharks (1-7) take on Santa Clara in a rematch, Saturday, February 19 at 10 a.m.
